Salesforce differentatiates between global and object-specific actions. Depending on the type, actions can be accessed from different places within the Salesforce user interface and different configuration options are available.
Are not specific to an object and can therefore be added on almost any page that supports actions. As a consequence, records created using global create actions have no relation to the record they have been created from.
Are specific to an object and can therefore only be added to page layouts of that object. As a consequence, records created using object-specific create actions are related to the record they have been created from. In addition to creating new records, object-specific action can also be used to update records.
Global and object-specific actions can be used to optimize business processes on mobile devices, by limiting the user input required to create or update information. Action layouts and predefined values are features to achieve this and are supported by both types of actions.
Adding too many fields to an action layout can impact user efficiency. It is recommended to not add more than eight fields to action layouts.
To reduce the number of fields on action layouts, predefined values can be set. Using predefined values, fields which require a value which can be defaulted.
