Describe the capabilities of and use cases for formula fields.
Formula fields automatically calculate and update their values based on logical expressions. They can contain references to related fields and calculations based on operators, functions, and literal values.
|Field Reference||A reference to the value of another field on the same object, or on a related object in a master-detail relationship.|
|Operator||A mathematical calculation or the calculation order.|
|Function||A system-defined formula that can require input and returns a value.|
|Literal Value||A static string or number that is not calculated or changed.|
Salesforce provides a large number of operators and functions, to formulate algorithms in formulas.
Formulas can be used in many Salesforce features to calculate values. Depending on the feature, the definition of formulas fulfills a different purpose.
